Flora street is a main thoroughfare for the train station, cafes, bus connnections and CBD of Sutherland. As part of the NSW Streets as Shared Spaces grant Sutherland tendered for 3 x 20m road parklets to create a vibrant and active space by relocating and increasing outdoor dining and parklets along Flora Street. We proposed a design incorporating Future Village modular parklets and Transportable Pergola parklets.
Render of Large Planter Pergola
An early issue to arise was that as the Transportable Pergola unit is a set length, the council wanted undercover areas in three of the parklets that were larger than this. We designed a new modular shade system that fixed to the Large Planters.
Another issue was fitting the sandstone logs into the design. We reconfigured our decking trays into single larger units and built a timber wall around these whilst still keeping within overall dimensions required.
Installation was done over 5 days. People Parkers units were delivered by tilt tray and placed directly into place whereas the Plantabox elements were brought in and assembled on site.

Overhead render of two Road parklets
Our design was based around individual cafe dining licences, with cafes holding licences being provided with undercover shelter and then areas open to the elements for general public to gather.
The main constraints facing Flora street was the road width. As it was a state transit bus route strict dimensions were in place. Also as the road had a 40m/hr limit council wanted to include sandstone logs as a barrier between vehicles and public using the parkets.
